We collect some nominal fees from selected students whose parents were rich, these fees more helpful for adjustment of salaries and stationery for the office.

In 2004 some Germans visited Karunya Public School, they donated some notebooks for the poor children in the school.

Teacher skills

Personal Accountability:

The focus for personal responsibility or accountability is ensure a plan is in place for students to: complete learning tasks on time, to hand in assigned work and to use the home/school agenda or tracking system in place.

Routines:

In the classroom, a plan is needed to ensure the student: follows directions, raises his/her hand before speaking, remains on task without wandering, work independently and cooperate by following the rules.

Interactions:

Skills to be addressed through a plan include: listening to others in large and small groups, knowing how to take turns, contributing appropriately, sharing, being polite and respectful during all group and classroom activities.

In The Yard:

Skills in the yard include, sharing equipment and sports items (balls, skipping ropes etc.), understanding the importance of teaming, avoiding arguing, accept team and sports rules, participating responsibibly.

Property:

These students need to learn how to care appropriately for both school and personal property. This includes, keeping desks tidy, putting items and materials back in their appropriate storage locations, putting coats, shoes, hats etc. away properly and keeping all personal items organized and easily accessible.

Summary:

Life skills includes the skills the student needs to be successful in society. Students with life skills programs are often those with severe learning disabilities, autistic tendencies, developmental disorders etc. For the most part, you can't take day to day responsibility for granted with these students. They need strategies in place to help them learn the essential life skills. They need to learn to be responsible for care of property, understanding the basic social rules, how to behave under different circumstances. The details I've listed will help you set up tracking systems or work with the student to enhance those necessary skills. Once the student has some understanding, you'll want self-tracking or monitoring to occur. You may want to devise a tracking sheet for specific areas to keep the student focused and on target.

Teaching rules and routines( Behavior)

The best strategies for establishing acceptable behaviors are those strategies that are pro-active and preventative. If you want cooperative children/students, they need to understand and be able to follow your rules and routines. Meeting this goal will ensure that you have a good learning environment.

First of all, you will need to communicate your expectations for acceptable behavior. How will you do this? You will teach the expectations, simply telling children about your expectations is not enough. The following steps will provide you with everything you need to meet with success:

  1. Describe the acceptable behaviors with words and actions; be specific. For instance, instead of telling them to use acceptable voices. Describe the levels of noise for the various activities. Ask them to demonstrate what voices are used during reading time, you should hear silence. Ask them to demonstrate what voices are use during group work, they should speak relatively quietly to their group members. Ask them who they should be talking to at group times. When this role play is complete, once again, ask the students to repeat the 3 types of voice levels and when they are to be used.
  2. Provide opportunties for children to practice expected behaviors. Again, this is like role playing but is quite necessary if you want children to fully understand your expectations. Be sure to focus on the students who experience behavior difficulties to demonstrate and tell you what the acceptable behaviors are in the various situations.
  3. Provide honest and ongoing feedback. Always let your children know if they are behaving appropriately or if there is something they could be doing to improve their behavior. Be specific when telling children what it is about how they're behaving. For instance, you may say that you really liked the way that they put everything away so quickly and quietly. Give regular reminders and feedback, this will help to establish a great climate for learning.
  4. What about the student that breaks the rules? This student should not be embarassed. If there are other students around, you will need to bring the student to a spot that is away from the other students. Ask him/her why he/she thinks you've asked to speak with them. Usually they can tell you. Ask them how they should have handled the situation and what they'll do next time. Include them in the consequence that should happen. Sometimes they'll tell you that they should work alone or that they should give an apology. Your consequence needs to be logical and fit the behavior deviation.
  5. Although you won't be able to predict absolutely every behavior problem that you may encounter, it will be possible to identify many of them. Once you are prepared for the most common behavior problems, you will be able to cope and be able to change many of them. It's often wise to prepare a list of potential behavior issues and preventative and reactive strategies that will lead to ongoing acceptable behaviors. Being prepared for and knowing how you'll handle behavior deviations is half the battle.

Behavior management

Behavior management is a great tool to help parents with behavior management. Is Your Child's Behavior a Problem at home or school? If so, you're not alone. A teacher or counselor can help with your child's specific behavior problems. Some students with learning disabilities or ADHDIEPs, but many behaviors can be minimized by controlling your response them. With these tips, you can decrease behavior problems using redirection. The goal of redirection is to teach the student to monitor and correct his own behavior. need a behavior modification plan in their

1. Ensure the Child Understands Why Her Behavior is a Problem

Reduce Behavior Problems with Behavior Management

While it may seem a child should "know better," talking about behavior is an important first step in behavior management. Some students do not think about their behavior or anticipate consequences when they have impulse control problems and difficulty picking up on social expectations. Describe problem behavior in a firm but non-confrontational tone. Some students respond better to a whispered reminder than a loud voice. Explain the behavior in specific terms the student will understand, and state why it is a problem.

  • Do Say:Throwing the baseball in the house can hurt someone.
  • Don't Say:Stop rough-housing

2. Explain Why Behavior is a Problem and What Will Be Done About It

Keep Communication Open for Effective Behavior Management

Clearly state the problems caused by the student's behavior. The student may be getting on your last nerve, but avoid criticizing him in a personal way. Realize you may need to repeat this strategy over time until the child stops the problem behavior.

  • Do Say:Your clothes are dirty because they were under your bed and not placed in the laundry basket. I'll show you how to wash them.
  • Don't Say:If you're too lazy to put your clothes in the basket, I'm not washing them.

3. Show Behavior Expectations - Model Appropriate Behavior for Your Child

Behavior Management Involves Demonstrating Correct Behavior

Before responding to the behavior, it can be helpful to take three deep breaths to relax and think about what the best response would be. Calmly but firmly, explain the behavior you want the child to perform. Use specific language to describe what the child should or should not do. Strive to keep a firm but unemotional tone that is free from sarcasm.

  • Do Say:Use a quiet voice inside the restaurant.
  • Don't Say:Act right.

4. Show By Your Actions and Attitude that You Believe in Your Child

Behavior Management Works Best When Used with Confidence

Encourage and reinforce the child's positive behaviors whenever possible. Although you may be frustrated by behavior, speak positively to the child and let her know you have confidence in her.

5. Recognize That Behavior Change Can Take Time

Patience is Important in Behavior Management

Give honest, specific praise for any progress the child makes toward meeting behavior goals, even if he does not meet the goal in its entirety.

6. Plan Ahead for Safe and Appropriate Options When Behavior is a Problem

Provide Accommodations in Advance for Effective Behavior Management
Getty
Know what situations cause problems for her, and prepare safe alternatives for her. Young children may enjoy role-playing ahead of time to learn the rules and expectations of the setting you will be in. Rehearse with them what they can do if they become angry or need to release some energy. Breathing techniques, taking a quick walk with a parent, playing word games, practicing math facts, and guessing games are often helpful for kids of all ages.

7. Share Your Behavior Management Strategies

Parents and Teachers Share Behavior Management Strategies

Do you have a story about behavior management you would like to share? We want to hear about it. Readers would love to hear your experiences and tips. Have you tried a program that was great? Have you used a strategy that just didn't work for you? If so, we want to know.

Introduction

Child Labour, consisting of children below 14 years of age, is defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as “the type of work performed by children that deprives them of their childhood and their dignity, which hampers their access to education and acquisition of skills and which is performed under conditions harmful to their health and their development. Children are the greatest gift to humanity and the same gift is being misused for personal gains as child labour. They constitute 36% of India’s population but a large majority of children in the age group of 5-14 years continue to remain in distress and turmoil. One in every five children below the age of 14 is a labourer. The flower (Child) withers before it blossoms.

Magnitude of the problem

Child labour is more a rural phenomenon than an urban phenomenon. Due to acute poverty poor families residing in rural areas send their children to urban areas for bread and butter. In urban areas, to survive in a cutthroat competition, manufacturers have lowered the real wages for adult workers in order to employ child workers on low wages. The problem is very much vast in its dimension. Children are forced to work in the most hazardous, unhygienic conditions, where they are vulnerable to many severe health problems.

Causes of Child Labour

In a country like India where over 40 percent of the population is living in conditions of extreme poverty, child labour is a complex issue. Following are some of the causes of child labour.

First Extreme poverty is the chief cause of child labour. The children either supplement their parents’ income or are the only wage earners in the family.

Second Child labour is deliberately created by vested interest to get cheap labour.

Third Low level of parental education is also an important factor in determining the incidence of child labour.

Fourth A majority of parents prefer to send their children to work rather than to school at the school-going age, primarily on account of their need for a supplementary income.

Measures to combat Child Labour

Child labour is a universal problem and as a citizen of India we must strive to take stern actions against child labour.

Role of NGOs: NGOs have an important role to play in the elimination of child labour. Government does not have the infrastructure to reach every section of the society and particularly the millions who work and live in remote areas. NGOs can act as a bridge between hard-to-reach areas and the government.

Role of Media: The role of media in elimination of child labour is one of the most important components of the process of total human development. The media should expose defaulting firms or business houses that clandestinely employ children and violate laws relating to child labour.

The government should give certain monetary or if need be non-monetary incentives to the families that live Below Poverty Line (BPL) to avoid child labour so that their children can be sent to school.

Effective state intervention to eliminate inequities, including class and caste barriers to employment and other opportunities in areas such as health and education, will put an end to child labour.

Conclusion

Child labour is an international evil. It requires cumulative efforts to wipe it out. Toiling long hours for a pittance, these little breadwinners accept exploitation as a way of life. The government on this front has also taken a few steps. The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the International Programme for Elimination of Child Labours in 1991 and India was the first to join the same in 1992. But still the problem persists due to poor implementation of the plans and programmes. The need of the hour is to expand the machinery for enforcing the various laws on child labour. There is a plethora of laws but nothing can eradicate child labour unless there is awareness among parents and children, which will go a long way in saving the future of millions of working children in India. Lastly instead of blaming the "supply side", we must focus on the "demand side'.
